i feel like i should pop a bottle!! silly... i know... but i feel like i have climbed (for me) the technological equivalent of a mountain summit... <br />
<br />
i still have to figure out how to save this as an uploadable file to spoonflower, but i really had fun hand drawing the little gems, now i want to color them and play with them a bit as the final pattern looks a little too directional... :)<br />
<br />
I. AM. EXCITE!!!!!<br />

<br />
ennyhoo...i thought it might be helpful... for my/your future reference, since some of my books are from the library... to list the books i'm reading and using for research as i continue my education... and if you have any recommendations for me, please share them in the comments!!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
1) <u>The Spoonflower Handbook</u> - seeing so many independent designers on the custom textile design website, <a href="http://spoonflower.com/" target="_blank">spoonflower</a>, really encouraged me to learn more about surface and textile design. this book covers some basic and fundamental info about what tools you'll need to start, fabric & surface, digital design, color theory, pattern repeats. the book also contains great creative process exercises/projects that encourage you to test your skills. i especially love that sprinkled throughout the book are quotes and anecdotes from some of my favorite designers about their struggles and thoughts on textile design.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&OneJS=1&Operation=GetAdHtml&MarketPlace=US&source=ac&ref=tf_til&ad_type=product_link&tracking_id=threadandgrap-20&marketplace=amazon&region=US&placement=1617690783&asins=1617690783&linkId=381cb0f863dfb8cce4930004a6681cac&show_border=false&link_opens_in_new_window=false&price_color=333333&title_color=0066C0&bg_color=FFFFFF" style="height: 240px; width: 120px;">
</iframe>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
2. <u>Print and Pattern Kids </u>- if you're interested in surface and textile design, you've probably already seen the <a href="http://printpattern.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Print & Pattern</a> blog. this book is from the creators of that blog and contains 700+ images of design from a 100+ designers. personally, i like to see how other designers approach similar prompts. this book is an excellent resource for design inspiration. for example, i'll bookmark each design that references "dogs" just to see how a designer repeated a pattern, if they used text, what color palette they used.... i dunno, maybe it sounds boring, but it's fascinating to me.... :)<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&OneJS=1&Operation=GetAdHtml&MarketPlace=US&source=ac&ref=tf_til&ad_type=product_link&tracking_id=threadandgrap-20&marketplace=amazon&region=US&placement=1780673000&asins=1780673000&linkId=baee7168e99bb7160d6c4a642517dc4b&show_border=false&link_opens_in_new_window=false&price_color=333333&title_color=0066c0&bg_color=ffffff" style="height: 240px; width: 120px;">
</iframe>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
3. A Field Guide to Fabric Design by <a href="http://www.kight.kim/" target="_blank">Kimberly Kight</a> - this book has been a great companion to all the other online classes I've enrolled in. it covers much of the basic information needed to build repeating patterns plus some detailed diagrams and instructions on how to develop patterns in either photoshop or illustrator.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&OneJS=1&Operation=GetAdHtml&MarketPlace=US&source=ac&ref=tf_til&ad_type=product_link&tracking_id=threadandgrap-20&marketplace=amazon&region=US&placement=1607053551&asins=1607053551&linkId=817ce8c710fc71fb0cab5228b8802496&show_border=false&link_opens_in_new_window=false&price_color=333333&title_color=0066c0&bg_color=ffffff" style="height: 240px; width: 120px;">
</iframe>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
4. Digital Textile Design by <a href="http://www.melaniebowles.co.uk/" target="_blank">Melanie Bowles</a> & Ceri Issac - this book has also been a welcome companion to all the online videos i've been replaying and pausing and replaying. although it covers some basics on how to create traditional patterns as well as custom repeat patterns, it also covers more advanced topics (for me) like engineered textile design and texture/pattern mapping.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&OneJS=1&Operation=GetAdHtml&MarketPlace=US&source=ac&ref=tf_til&ad_type=product_link&tracking_id=threadandgrap-20&marketplace=amazon&region=US&placement=1780670028&asins=1780670028&linkId=9c8a96de2af41ab716d1c931309bd5c3&show_border=false&link_opens_in_new_window=false&price_color=333333&title_color=0066c0&bg_color=ffffff" style="height: 240px; width: 120px;">
</iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
5. Mastering the Art of Fabric Printing and Design by <a href="http://lauriewisbrun.com/" target="_blank">Laurie Wisbrun</a> - i haven't referred to this book as often as the others, but it is wonderful. it does have digital design instruction & exercises but also covers hand printing in detail. this book also has some great interviews with established designers that are fascinating and a short but informative chapter on what to do if/when you decide to pursue textile/surface design as a profession.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&OneJS=1&Operation=GetAdHtml&MarketPlace=US&source=ac&ref=tf_til&ad_type=product_link&tracking_id=threadandgrap-20&marketplace=amazon&region=US&placement=1452101159&asins=1452101159&linkId=60e66d42ee894701aeabc13f3432ed5b&show_border=false&link_opens_in_new_window=false&price_color=333333&title_color=0066c0&bg_color=ffffff" style="height: 240px; width: 120px;">

day 2 (of 30 day of drawing with lisa congdon on creative bug) is teacup.<br/>
<br/>
my "go to" hot tea is chai, cold tea is thai...<br/>
<br/>
but one of my favorite teas ever was a blend of loose tea a friend of mine made with chrysanthemum and vanilla... yum!! <br/>
<br/>
what is your fave tea? go get some! <br/>
<br/>
thanks for stopping by!</div>mamazillahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03487039603684562754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1146562841981708609.post-57668781363477076532016-06-01T06:46:00.001-07:002016-06-01T06:46:17.273-07:0030 days of drawing<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><a href='https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-UDqTkkalw1A/V07nKBXg0zI/AAAAAAAAANs/HqQrtZjzehc/s2560/%25255BUNSET%25255D.jpg' onblur='try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}'><img border='0' src='https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-UDqTkkalw1A/V07nKBXg0zI/AAAAAAAAANs/HqQrtZjzehc/s640/%25255BUNSET%25255D.jpg' style='display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;'/></a><br/>

i had a really fun time participating in creative bug's 31 days of drawing with molly hatch and heather ross. so, i'm going to try another similar older drawing challenge for june... the first prompt from lisa congdon is "draw a tree". <br/>
<br/>
the current challenge is actually 30 days of painting with augustwren.... which i might also try because i'm HORRIBLE at watercolor.... 😀 <br/>
<br/>
if you haven't tried any of these chalenges, i encourage you to do so! thanks for stopping by and reading!</div>mamazillahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03487039603684562754noreply@blogger.com0Long Beach, California, United States33.7625 -118.13583tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1146562841981708609.post-18264525524180981172016-05-27T21:24:00.001-07:002016-05-27T21:24:53.078-07:00doodleydoo...<div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

more and more, i'm really intrigued by surface and pattern design... i've always loved looking and buying (ha!) patterned fabric. and now with the introduction of custom printed fabric by companies like spoonflower, designing your own fabric can be a reality.
in an effort to exercise my creative process, i picked up lisa congdon's book "20 ways to draw a tulip". i really love the whimsical quality of lisa's drawings and her fabrics. lisa also teaches online drawing classes on creativebug. these two doodles were made from lisa's prompts. these were so fun to make! i can't wait to try these techniques in other ways! :)mamazillahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03487039603684562754noreply@blogger.com0Long Beach, California, United States33.7625 -118.13583tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1146562841981708609.post-84122114816097821862014-10-08T10:24:00.001-07:002014-10-08T10:24:16.036-07:00#inktober day 4<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-gKxC10mzpMs/VDVzMKRVaII/AAAAAAAAADg/MXWMjQuONHs/s1600/IMG_20141004_185852.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"> <img border="0" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-gKxC10mzpMs/VDVzMKRVaII/AAAAAAAAADg/MXWMjQuONHs/s640/IMG_20141004_185852.jpg"> </a> </div>mamazillahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03487039603684562754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1146562841981708609.post-48170420056712227612014-10-08T10:23:00.001-07:002014-10-08T10:23:07.921-07:00#inktober day 3<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-cGvVBobm0u4/VDVy-TJ_2OI/AAAAAAAAADY/LYs7-zAES-E/s1600/IMG_20141003_180836.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"> <img border="0" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-cGvVBobm0u4/VDVy-TJ_2OI/AAAAAAAAADY/LYs7-zAES-E/s640/IMG_20141003_180836.jpg"> </a> </div>mamazillahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03487039603684562754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1146562841981708609.post-86908595190397603532014-10-07T07:55:00.001-07:002014-10-07T07:58:07.801-07:00#inktober day 2<p dir=ltr>i've been toying with this idea for a while... wondering what words templeton would have found for charlotte today...</p>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
in the cutting instructions, you are directed to cut 2 pcs of pattern piece I out of interfacing. however, in the diagram under interfacing, the pattern piece J is pictured. then later, in the sewing instructions, the pattern piece I is referenced again... so, i cut per the cutting and sewing instructions and ignored the diagram... :) also, i recommend taking the time to mark and notch wherever indicated. no short cuts, newbies!!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
regarding the sewing instructions, i ignored the first one, indicating that the edges of some pattern pieces be finished beforehand... i just french seamed everything.... i'm sure this would make the project take longer than usual and be more difficult for a beginner, but i prefer the look of these seams... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
and as i went along, i realized that french seams complemented the top... between the care taken to create the pocket, the pleated collar and the simple, clean beauty of the facings and back pleats, the pressing and understitching, etc... zig zagged or serged seams just didn't ring true for me...</div>

i really enjoyed making this top and will definitely make more. if you haven't made this top, i highly recommend it! it was a lot of fun and worth the time and effort. i think the only thing i'd do differently next time is adding the bias to the armholes BEFORE sewing up the side seams. it was awwwwwkward... :)</div>

<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;">hey chicago,</span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;">so, i just wanted to touch base... because this time tomorrow, i'll be boarding a plane to cali.</span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;">i'm kinda amazed at how emotional i am at this move... back in '95, when i left for sf, i couldn't leave fast enough... there was just one too many deaths, unhappy endings, and personal failures... i realize now how angry and desperate i was when i left that time... </span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;">i became whole again and healed during my time away but i'm thankful that since moving back in '01, we've mended the bridge that i burned. thank you for forgiving and forgetting and welcoming me home.</span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;">i shouldn't be surprised since you welcomed me into the world. you were there for my first tooth, my first step, my first potty parade...</span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;">you played with me under the streetlights in the illegal water spray of a fire hydrant while harry announced a cubs game on wgn (go sox!).... we rollerskated at rainbo ate bowls of ice cream at zephyrs... we shoplifted funyuns... we watched movies at the milford.... we performed my solo at the mwhs talent show... we danced at medusas and ate cheese fries at muskies... and graduated to rainbo club and marie's rip tide.... we shopped with michael jackson and siouxsie and the banshees at fao schwarz... and sprinkled in all our trips to the art institute, the shedd, eating ice cream at the msi... that taste of chicago year, when i knew someone who worked at every booth and saw squeeze for free.... we danced with mc hammer in that bar in new orleans... we studied with gwendolyn brooks at columbia... we whispered about our first kisses, our first loves and first heartbreaks while listening to sly and the family stone, on the hood of your car at the lake...</span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;">thanks for coming out to meet dj and to witness our marriage in sf... and thanks for joining me in welcoming my children into the world too... </span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;">and here we are, just a few blocks from where i was born... </span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;">to be honest, i've kinda been avoiding you, because i know that i will break into tears when i see you... just like i am, right now, as i type this... but i just wanted you to know, that i think about you ALL THE TIME and will miss you terribly (to list the things i will miss about you will take a millenia... and i type and edit with glacier speed...) while in california... </span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;">i will experience something new, awful, and/or funny and will turn to you and not find you there... and no, a facebook post is a poor substitute for you.... because you are brilliant, and funny and loving and supportive and there is no one else like you.</span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;">so, please send me off with good, happy thoughts and positivity and love, i leave all of that and inifintely more with you too... </span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;">i close with one request... somewhere out there is another woman.... and she may have a family.... she may even arrive in chicago, the same day i leave... please welcome her/them. please don't be shy, show them around, and not just the landmarks or weiners circle.... ask them over for your block party and teach them how to play cornhole, catch fireflies, ride bikes under the vast canopies of trees, meet them out at a SOX game, dance, drink and eat pizza and hot dogs with them.... </span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;">'cause if i meet her at o'hare, i'm gonna say "i gotta guy", and i'll be referring to you... you are my treasure, i want to share that wealth...</span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;">i will see you later, chicago.</span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>

the first <a href="http://sewliberated.com/products/schoolhouse-tunic-sewing-pattern" target="_blank">sew liberated schoolhouse tunic</a> i made was a sample for <a href="http://theneedleshop.net/" target="_blank">the needle shop</a>. so, i made it to fit the mannequin. i think it was a 2/4 aka too tiny for me.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br />
so, i made another one in <a href="http://cloud9fabrics.com/monsterz.html" target="_blank">cloud 9 monsterz fabric</a> designed by michele brummer everett.<br />
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
i made it in "my size" aka i was lazy and didn't make a muslin. and although i could/can get the garment on and it fits. it's uncomfortable. so, this tunic now resides in paloma's closet. :( lucky duck. :)<br />
<br />
i did make another one for me, the next size up.... stay tuned...</div>

my sister bought a few <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malong" target="_blank">malongs</a> for me and for the longest time, i haven't done anything with them because a) i don't really wear them b) i really love the fabric and couldn't bear to cut it up... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
but i recently whittled down my stash again and found them and was inspired to use them, they're just too pretty to sit in a box. i made one of them into a <a href="http://shop.grainlinestudio.com/product/tiny-pocket-tank" target="_blank">tiny pocket tank</a>. it's a very easy pattern - the instructions and diagrams are very clear.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhn26kE2K2ZTKoqSa8P0RvxXpwNDw3C7NONuYUULcAAn1UD22Vk5sgiLSQ5skxAm4QCzhoU53TuM1ks7jrdY5h2OyjKbpfZ6e9xZq71yi9AeqUmgrW0gGOzyQM_EVWAEOG6AIH4-2BOcvck/s1600/CAM00002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhn26kE2K2ZTKoqSa8P0RvxXpwNDw3C7NONuYUULcAAn1UD22Vk5sgiLSQ5skxAm4QCzhoU53TuM1ks7jrdY5h2OyjKbpfZ6e9xZq71yi9AeqUmgrW0gGOzyQM_EVWAEOG6AIH4-2BOcvck/s400/CAM00002.jpg" height="400" width="296" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
i'm so pleased with how it turned out and how it fits. and i actually have enough fabric left over to make a wrap skirt too! bonus! this tank is going to be a great layering addition. looking forward to making more breezy tanks this summer... maybe i should start a new challenge and make tanks on tuesdays! </div>

<br />
<a _mce_href="http://abeautifulmess.typepad.com/my_weblog/project-restyle.html" href="http://abeautifulmess.typepad.com/my_weblog/project-restyle.html"><img _mce_src="http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x134/elsieflannigan/widget_4.jpg" src="http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x134/elsieflannigan/widget_4.jpg" /></a> :)<br />
<br />
i'm not sure what possessed me to buy this mini skirt save for the cute pleats and the tweedy comfort fabric... i mean... look at it:<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2d4WiePPhhJL5p7Hewzp2Cw5S16eLXdHbpG73inQnZG5YN9nGYJsgDAUTtl97_apG1drT7ZZfGkHwsqIn3j0I72Kfqe8jlCQFUA2sEkLgSac3Rg4HqgAy9y3sY7gMitfswrIRYq0Zj4PY/s1600/021.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5563538120411062434" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2d4WiePPhhJL5p7Hewzp2Cw5S16eLXdHbpG73inQnZG5YN9nGYJsgDAUTtl97_apG1drT7ZZfGkHwsqIn3j0I72Kfqe8jlCQFUA2sEkLgSac3Rg4HqgAy9y3sY7gMitfswrIRYq0Zj4PY/s320/021.JPG" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 240px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 320px;" /></a><br />
<br />
it's the same size as my smallest cutting mat! *facepalm*<br />
<br />
since buying it at the thrift store, it's been sitting in my closet... and keeping it company was this vintage brown Hope Reed dress that i've had FOREVER - probably a find from my days managing a vintage clothing store in the early 90s... <br />

<br />
the dress was always too big (my dress form, Gladys, is also bigger than me), but i loved the pin tuck detailing on the collar and yoke. <br />
<br />
so... i chopped off about a foot from the bottom of the dress... added it to the mini... used my <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Singer-Model-7467-Sewing-Machine/dp/B00176TVI8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1295366226&sr=8-2">handy dandy sewing machine</a> to add some decorative stitching.... used some leftover muslin and lace for another underskirt:<br />

<br />
une jupe! "modified"! <br />
<br />
i think i was inspired by some of the imaginative outfits japanese youth cobble together in the magazine <a href="http://www.fruits-mg.com/xnew/e/index.html">FRUiTS</a>. i have a well loved moldy old issue. i especially enjoy when they mashup two design influences like lolita and steampunk. i'm too "old" to wear their versions, so here's mine.<br />
<br />
i'm working on the leftovers of the dress now... will post results later. :) thanks for coming by and reading! Happy Tuesday!<br />

<br />
<a _mce_href="http://abeautifulmess.typepad.com/my_weblog/project-restyle.html" href="http://abeautifulmess.typepad.com/my_weblog/project-restyle.html"><img _mce_src="http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x134/elsieflannigan/widget_4.jpg" src="https://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x134/elsieflannigan/widget_4.jpg"></a><br />
<br />
the challenge is so appealing to me because although i buy (and LOVE) vintage or thrift store items, i also find it very difficult to restyle them - even if the fit is all kinds of wrong... i sometimes feel as if i'm defacing a piece of history... BUT. i have ended up with a lot of vintage and thrift scores that i never wear.... i'm hopeful that this challenge will encourage me to move beyond my paradigm and into some really cute outfits - while exercising my creative process! :) <br />
<br />
my journey starts with two restyled denim skirts that i had made with two old pairs of ill fitting jeans... (see!?) i really enjoyed making the skirts but when i tried them on they looked too (for lack of a better word) matronly. i may be a mom and not quite 40, but i wouldn't call myself "may-tron-lee"...<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnpnKc3qXvWrr29iyTF6oz85b2sht90Z9EcS4lgClUrVZeoStqyB4EGiBG1DVGEy2rq5SfYwu-vd2n52LTGVcE3fE3TTePYkxiZWO2GApwdxcfD3vsUoB6GksaJ8EZEJ4WpOS6zPRI3A6e/s1600/001.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5561859042677615762" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnpnKc3qXvWrr29iyTF6oz85b2sht90Z9EcS4lgClUrVZeoStqyB4EGiBG1DVGEy2rq5SfYwu-vd2n52LTGVcE3fE3TTePYkxiZWO2GApwdxcfD3vsUoB6GksaJ8EZEJ4WpOS6zPRI3A6e/s320/001.JPG" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; height: 240px; width: 320px;" /></a><br />
<br />
like most sewing enthusiasts, i have a gazillion scraps and random varied gimp lying around. i bought this really cool peter max / biba / lautrec mashup inspired fabric from <a href="http://www.theneedleshop.net/index.php">the needle shop</a> a few years ago:<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjooM0WHQoj5RTDe_t5QKYrzsvsoIszdYk_TZu9XzBBKL1CftKdxxMBxyq8dzaprqtlC6JNKB0lBmTK3LFFH3MI0rCEiPbOIOdHxfr5UOCbZJEEpzW2iNP0RG14FJjAG5oCPbNv43D1aytY/s1600/003.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5561859047515236882" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjooM0WHQoj5RTDe_t5QKYrzsvsoIszdYk_TZu9XzBBKL1CftKdxxMBxyq8dzaprqtlC6JNKB0lBmTK3LFFH3MI0rCEiPbOIOdHxfr5UOCbZJEEpzW2iNP0RG14FJjAG5oCPbNv43D1aytY/s320/003.JPG" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; height: 240px; width: 320px;" /></a><br />
<br />
then, i just started to cut... and cut.... and cut... and pieced everything back together... with all the cotton lace scraps i had and a piece of that fabric scrap above...<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgb0EFW40YjwexM9XRp18XhDjiXDz-wqjEtTv0X2ijBg4-_U-0nTdZivJMW-je44HweZrmecmADTUwikHPIekzbxkpbP1rO-rfkVOOzpBfWKeD_HchkN-skVyFcw9TN4XSYk_G4s7sQkW_K/s1600/004.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5561859053214716354" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgb0EFW40YjwexM9XRp18XhDjiXDz-wqjEtTv0X2ijBg4-_U-0nTdZivJMW-je44HweZrmecmADTUwikHPIekzbxkpbP1rO-rfkVOOzpBfWKeD_HchkN-skVyFcw9TN4XSYk_G4s7sQkW_K/s320/004.JPG" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; height: 320px; width: 240px;" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_p5seOsZBSLWq_QxVRGc_1tqhSGknMoFjYiBoAbO30X4v4IiJ52xN4Zm4Ju5U2LCqJKM02Z8maCe2Btx0tz72aJKZYcG_r-fCLoiLHcxPiQv_OSDkvGD1UU1PSJv5D5MMkOfB2GuH5s8z/s1600/008.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5561859063827854530" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_p5seOsZBSLWq_QxVRGc_1tqhSGknMoFjYiBoAbO30X4v4IiJ52xN4Zm4Ju5U2LCqJKM02Z8maCe2Btx0tz72aJKZYcG_r-fCLoiLHcxPiQv_OSDkvGD1UU1PSJv5D5MMkOfB2GuH5s8z/s320/008.JPG" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; height: 320px; width: 240px;" /></a><br />
<br />
i still had some denim left over and found this <a href="http://craftzine.com/02/wear_slippers/">really cute house slipper pattern from craftzine</a>. one of my other personal hurdles is NOT finishing seams... you might not think so considering the skirt above, but it's REALLY difficult for me NOT to finish a seam. i was taught to make a garment as smooth on the inside as it is on the outside... so, after making the skirt it was nice to make the house slippers with finished edges... i needed a little balance. :) the pattern still works - it just required a little rethinking of the sewing directions... the denim scraps i had are only big enough for the size S (5/6) so they're going to an old HS friend of mine who has always had teeny tiny feet. :)<br />

ok. i dunno what it's like at your house right now but at our house - it's absolute MADNESS.... <br />
<br />
unlike the serene & orderly appearance of this blog, my living room is resembling santa's workshop after a visit from a psycho with chain saw... there's glitter and boucle fuzz where glitter and boucle fuzz should just. not. be. O_o<br />
<br />
i have waaaay too many projects going on at once for birthdays, donations, the holidays, new baby arrivals, etc... and the children are on crafting overdrive... they've turned it up to 11!!! :)<br />
<br />
they're also still attending birthday parties... and i am still making birthday presents.... i SWEAR people are having WAY to much unprotected sex in the spring... jeez LOUISE!!!! <br />
<br />
"mother's tired, she needs a rest...." :) ennyhooo.... here are my two latest creations:<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvcJ8FtoHkqZvvvTImm5Go5VhsTyrWkQc8KltzxAp0znRBjFTjSFkS2OrwuW8vHcqFQHlacuZxGGkvyy1QYjB72a8iKBIMaqDHI7rkoqr0ApBJiAqBcyus-fm-CP5C2Uf2cc2gDk4u1hbJ/s1600/001.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5549078419365352482" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvcJ8FtoHkqZvvvTImm5Go5VhsTyrWkQc8KltzxAp0znRBjFTjSFkS2OrwuW8vHcqFQHlacuZxGGkvyy1QYjB72a8iKBIMaqDHI7rkoqr0ApBJiAqBcyus-fm-CP5C2Uf2cc2gDk4u1hbJ/s400/001.JPG" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 300px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 400px;" /></a><br />
<br />
the doll's dress is made from an alteration of <a href="http://www.simplicity.com/p-2190-doll-clothes.aspx">simplicity 4786</a>. i added the shoulder ruffle from <a href="http://www.simplicity.com/p-2139-doll-clothes.aspx">simplicity 4268</a>.<br />
<br />
the girl's dress is an (neckline) alteration of <a href="http://www.simplicity.com/p-1893-child-dresses.aspx">simplicity 3510</a>. i added the center front ruffles and sequin trim... just because. :)<br />

<br />
the boy's shirt was made from <a href="http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/patterns/sewingpatterns.pl?patternid=9918">butterick 3475</a>. however, i didn't have the right size so, i had to grade up the pattern myself. it turned out well i think and apparently fits it's owner perfectly. hopefully, that will be true this summer. the fabric was actually a production sample i received from one of my former manufacturers when i worked for <a href="http://www.joeboxer.com/">joe boxer</a>. i wish i could remember the name of the fabric - we were so good as so many things at JB including naming colors and fabrics. :)<br />
<br />
last but not remotely in the least... the porkchop celebrated his 5th birthday on tuesday. much love, hugging, gift wrap ripping, hilarity and cake ensued... HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my s'wonderfullest little man:<br />

<br />
so, first and foremost... the reason for the quiet blog? well, we've celebrated a number of birthdays which are usually preceded and followed with LOTS of sewing... however, not only did the kids bring home bags full of goodies... my dear (suffering) husband had the misfortune of bringing home the chicken pox. <br />
<br />
thankfully, i'd already suffered thru them as a child and the kids have already been vaccinated... he had to stay away from the public for at least a week and was too sick to really do anything except stay in bed. so, i had to double up some parenting duties... honestly, i had no idea i could be this tired. so beware the birthday parties, parents... BEWARE.... :)<br />
<br />
ennyhoo.... back to the birthday gifts... i was really proud of these three, all made for classmates in porkchop's jr. kindergarten class:<br />
<br />

<br />
i made another bunny from <a href="http://shop.marthastewart.com/Martha-Stewarts-Encyclopedia-of-Sewing-and/A/0307450589.htm">martha stewart's encyclopedia of sewing and fabric crafts</a>. i made the tote bag by copying another one we had lying around. the fabric flower was another made with the help of <a href="http://blairpeter.typepad.com/weblog/2006/03/fabric_flowers.html">the wisecraft fabric flower tutorial</a>. inside the bag, along with the bunny, i placed a lovely book perfect for ANY young girl, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Name-Not-Isabella-Jennifer-Fosberry/dp/0980200075">"my name is not isabella"</a>. the book is beautifully illustrated, educational and empowering for girls. it also gives a short bio of "women who changed the world" which includes "Mommy". :)<br />

<br />
so, i didn't think the boys would appreciate a bunny... i've made teddy bears from the book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Toys-Sew-Patterns-Animals-Accessories/dp/0307345416">"toys to sew"</a>. but, i felt like i needed to make something new. a little further in the book are patterns for dinosaurs, like the apatosaurus above. and this pattern (like the herbivore dinosaur) scared me the least. the patterns for the stegosaurus and the t-rex are really amazing but frankly, nightmarish. when i have more time, i'll try them. <br />
<br />
maybe.<br />
<br />
i put the initals of the boys' names on each bag and filled them with items purchased from our local toy store, <a href="http://www.buildingblockstoys.com/">building blocks toys</a>, a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-2381-Decorate-Your-Own-Train/dp/B000U46NQG">melissa & doug paint craft</a>, a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/More-Kumon-Publishing-North-America/dp/1933241357/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1291264311&sr=1-2">kumon origami book</a>, a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Schylling-MGSL-Magic-Slates/dp/B000ICZ5IW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1291264451&sr=1-1">magic drawing slate</a>, and a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Train-Station-Sticker-Activity-Little/dp/0486405125/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1291264542&sr=1-3">dover sticker book</a>. what can i say? i like to spread the crafty, artsy fartsy love... :)<br />
<br />
